Managing Director

The Managing Director is responsible for communicating with and connecting the various components of State of Formation’s organizational structure (Journal of Inter-Religious Dialogue Staff, Executive Committee, Executive Subcommittees, Assistant Director of Operations, Contributing Scholars). He or she conducts general oversight to ensure consistency with and commitment to the strategic vision of State of Formation (SoF) from all parties.

On the operational level, the Managing Director coordinates with the Assistant Director of Operations, who acts as the Director’s primary support personnel. The Managing Director provides supervision and delegates additional tasks to this individual as required.

The Managing Director communicates weekly to all Contributing Scholars through the SoF Digest (mass email), which he or she produces and which includes memoranda, summaries of popular and refeatured content, suggested writing prompts, and updates on general SoF developments. He or she also corresponds with Contributing Scholars on an individual basis as needed.

The Managing Director also reviews and selects new applicants together with the Membership Subcommittee, Executive Committee, and Assistant Director of Operations.

The Managing Director is responsible for managing the Executive Committee and Executive Subcommittees. He or she organizes and facilitates bi-weekly Subcommittee conference calls and bi-monthly Executive Committee conference calls. He or she makes ensures that each subcommittee is meeting regularly and staying on task, and provides strategic direction as needed to develop objectives and achievable goals.

Finally, the Managing Director tracks the impact of State of Formation, and sets organizational goals and objectives to ensure the continued growth and success of the project.

Anticipated Hours: 15 hours per week, with variation based on the week and time of year

Remuneration: Stipend of $3,000


Assistant Director of Operations

The Assistant Director of Operations works beneath the Managing Director, and is responsible for ensuring the overall functionality of the State of Formation (SoF) website, empowering its Contributing Scholars to use the platform efficiently and effectively, and cultivating State of Formation’s social media presence.

Daily tasks include posting new SoF articles to Facebook and Twitter, and moderating and approving comments on WordPress posts. The Assistant Director of Operations should strive to increase the social media presence of State of Formation, and develop an effective strategy for doing so.

The Assistant Director of Operations reviews and selects new applicants along with the Membership Subcommittee, Executive Committee, and Managing Director. He or she is responsible for adding new scholar information and photos to Contributing Scholar page. The Asst. Director of Operations is expected to help new Contributing Scholars become comfortable with WordPress posting procedures. He or she modifies and maintains the SoF tech support manual in MS Publisher, which is emailed to new contributing scholars and posted to the SoF Google Group. The Assistant Director of Operations provides ongoing technical support to contributing scholars via email, as well as responds to special requests from contributing scholars.

The Assistant Director of Operations plays an instrumental role in educating other staff about the effective use of web-based media. He or she should present to Executive Committee and Subcommittee members on WordPress and social media best practices and strategy at State of Formation’s annual retreat.

He or she liaises with the Technology Sub-Committee to implement changes to the SoF website as needed (adding plugins, changing design, adding temporary content, etc.).

Finally, the Assistant Director tracks site performance using Google Analytics and communicates this data to other staff members as requested.
